Salem, Oregon, NW Viticulture Center – February 12, 2004 In an awards ceremony held at the NW Viticulture Center, The Oregon Wine & Food Festival and Roth’s, IGA presented their top Oregon wine picks for 2004. Wine Stewards from Roth’s chose a total of 25 wines in first, second and third place. 17 Oregon wineries submitted wines for judging, 11 took home awards. Silvan Ridge/Hinman Vineyards swept the competition earning 4 medals; 3 in first place for their 00 Cabernet, 99 Merlot and 02 Specialty Wine and one in third place for their 99 Pinot Noir. Other first choice awards went to Eola Hills Winery for their 00 Chardonnay, Amity Vineyards for their 01 Dry Gewurztraminer, Flerchinger Vineyards for their 02 Riesling, Marquam Hill Vineyards for their 01 Pinot Noir and Brandborg Winery for their 02 Pinot Gris.
All 84 wines submitted were “brown bagged” and judged based on aroma, depth, tannins, complexity, colour and overall taste. “It was a tough competition. Oregon has some amazing wines out there.” Dick Van Osdal, Roth’s, IGA Wine Steward.
The Oregon Wine & Food Festival is scheduled for February 20-22, 2004 at the Oregon State Fairgrounds, Jackman-Long Building. The event features wineries, restaurants, musicians and chefs from Salem, OR and surrounding areas. It offers the “first taste of the wine season” from over 30 of Oregon’s finest wineries.
