Visit some McMinnville area wineries this Thanksgiving 2005

As I was preparing to write this I realized I have not posted in a long time. I have had a chance to visit a few wineries in the last few months and wanted to quickly let you in on them. I will try to post better detailed summaries in the future on them.

Stone Wolf is a label we all see in the stores and I was surprised at the quality of the wine. In my experience, usually the grocery store wines are cheaply made and don't have the time put in to them so you don't get much out of them. Stone Wolf's wines are not like that at all. These were well made wines and all the wines across the board showed great taste and textures and if you need to pick up a wine on the way to a dinner party be very assured a Stone Wolf wine will be perfect.

Hillcrest was a visit that was much longer then expected. If you are not careful you can spend a few hours talking to Dyson, winemaker and owner, about all things regarding the wine, winery and area. The wines will make sure you don't run in quickly and run out.

Kelley Family Vineyard was only showing three wines but all were exceptional. Here is a little winery you need to visit this weekend and see for yourself. I loved the late harvest Riesling and see myself buying a bit more this weekend.

What new wineries have popped up recently? I don't see as many as the last big Holiday had but Apolloni and Coelho seem to be new on the scene for this weekend. Also I see a new location for wineries to be pouring at, NW Wine Company. I am not sure how you can pour wines from SEVENTEEN, yes 1 7 , wineries at one stop but they are doing it. They are located in McMinnville.

I just want to remind all you tasters, there will be a few tasting fees this weekend. I know a lot of people hate them and don't see the use in them. For non holiday weekends I would agree with you but remember a lot of the wineries that will be open are not very large in production and capital. The wineries can't really afford to give away a large part of their wines for people out looking for the next big wine. In the past I have asked if I get a discount if I return the glass and at times they will accept that.

Don't be afraid to buy your Christmas wine while tasting, heck by Christmas and New Year Eve wines while you are out. Figure you need 4 reds and 2 whites and one bubbly to get you over the next 2 holidays.
